$1,000 Supreme Commander Tournament

GameSpot is running a 64-player Supreme Commander tournament with prizes totaling $1,000 in Best Buy gift certificates. The 64 players will be whittled down to the top three, who will then face off in a free for all match, with the winner getting $600, second place getting $300, and the loser getting $100. The final match will be broadcast live on streaming web video, which might actually be a fun event to watch. I just wish the prizes were more significant. $1,000 in Best Buy gift certificates? Meh. I could personally put on a tournament of that value and not bat an eye. And I suspect the reason GameSpot is using gift certificates, rather than real money, is because Best Buy is a sponsor.

But still, this should be interesting. Tournaments are always more fun when there’s money on the line. Registrations open up in five minutes (from when this post was posted); I really hope that some of the Supreme Commander top-ranked players manage to get into the tournament, because I want to see some good battles. I also hope that some of the final battles’ replay files make it to the web. Those will be fun to do an analysis of.
