Multiplayer ranks demystified
It turns out the multiplayer ranks actually have names; they just aren’t used anywhere in the interface (yet?). I figured this out by working off the theme of one of the images whose link was provided to me. Here we go:
Rookie
<1800

Class A
1800-1999

Expert
2000-2199

Master
2200-2399

Grandmaster
2400+ or 2400-2599?

Former Champion
Previously ranked #1, not currently

Champion
Ranked #1

So we’re left with a few questions here. Is there anything above Grandmaster? We won’t know for quite a while. Nobody has even hit Grandmaster yet, and based on the size of the community and how the point scoring system works, it might be impossible for anyone to break 2600.
I wasn’t able to figure out the name of the two star rank or ex-champion; all of the obvious guesses yielded 404s. Try some guesses yourself though; we should be able to crack them. Just append it to the images directory (which unfortunately has directory listing turned off). For example, the champion image is located at http://gpgnet.gaspowered.com/chatimages/champion.png. Figure out the names of the images for the two missing ranks and we’ll know the names of them.
Update: Thanks to DeadLegion for figuring out the name of the “Former Champion” rank. Now we just need to crack two stars and we’re done.
Update 2: Thanks to Zulan for figuring out the name of the two star rank. It’s “Class A”. I wouldn’t have guessed. At least we’ve filled out all of the regular rankings now.

2 stars is probably intermediate, if I were to guess.

Nope, doesn’t work. http://gpgnet.gaspowered.com/chatimages/intermediate.png doesn’t exist. We’ll know we have the right name when we figure out where the two-star image file is located.

In addition to some of those, I’ve tried veteran, major, sergeant, and neophyte. No luck yet. The rank names do seem to be the same as those used in Chess rankings, hence why I tried Neophyte ..

And one more that I’ve seen in chat. (Butters uses this one). http://gpgnet.gaspowered.com/chatimages/thq.png
I’m guessing it’s for THQ employees or representatives who are not attached to GPG.

Man Zulan just beat me to it. :) Here is one more:

Were you going to guess classa? If so, how? I wouldn’t have thought of that in a long, long time.

I used a program called Ethereal which is a packet monitoring program. I simply just looked at all the HTTP GET requests GPGNet was sending. They were:
Expert.png
Master.png
ClassA.png
gpgnet.png (oddly this doesnt exist)
system.png
thq.png
admin.png
betachamp.png
It only requests on a need to know basis. So there was no request for grandmaster.png for instance (because no one is a grandmaster).

Ethereal? You sure you don’t mean Wireshark? (It was renamed.) I was going to try that at some point, but manual guessing ended up being easier for the simple ones. Not sure if I would’ve gotten ClassA without “cheating”, as it were, though.

Of course I didn’t guess classa, I’m not DOSing gpgnet ;-)

.. actually in chess they call “1800-1999 Amateur, Class A” (see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo-Zahl , not found in the english Version)
