First (?) third-party unit released

Some folks over at ModDB have released what I believe to be the first third-party unit for Supreme Commander. The description page is kind of sketchy; all I can tell you about the unit itself is what I can guess from the screenshots. It looks to be a fairly powerful air unit. It’s a “Tyranid Cruiser” from the Battlefleet Gothic mythos. Color me slightly disappointed that the first third party unit isn’t something that actually fits into the mythos of Supreme Commander, but whatever, I’ll take what I can get. Hopefully this signifies an incoming flood of further third party units, many of which should integrate nicely into Supreme Commander.

    meh…

I’ll take GPG units only, thanks. I can’t stand third-party units… they never look or move quite right. Plus, I’d rather see GPG start releasing units and also come out later this year with an expansion pack so that we get a lot of units to play with without having to create new artwork which is always the hardest part… modeling, animating, etc.

Just someone make a quality GUI-based unit editor so we can reconfigure every unit’s stats and weaponry and weapon stats, and I’d be happy. Then I could rebalance everything how I would like it to be. =)

    I play mostly skirmish anyway.

I wouldn’t go so far. I’m not automatically excluding all third party units from consideration. I just don’t really like this one. It doesn’t even pretend to fit into the SupCom universe; it’s something wholly else simply uprooted and transplanted. I think there’s lots of room for third party devs to expand the units in the game, much like they did with the huge 3rd party unit packs in Total Annihilation. Sure, the base unit set won’t change, but it’s always nice to have the ability to swap in a mod and play basically an entirely different game online with your friends when the base set starts to get boring.

I’d actually be pretty interested in a mod where all of the combat units’ effectiveness was severely reduced and the variety and effectiveness of artillery was increased. It’d turn into a huge strategic battle of controlling vital artillery positions, reinforcing them, and slowly advancing your firebases. Now I wouldn’t want to play this all of the time, but every once in awhile would be nice.

Has GPG ever said anything about official units being released in the future? I remember with total annihilation Cavedog released some official units for a while. I would welcome official units, but most of the units made by other people are grossly imbalanced.

Sadly, Cyde Weys’ description of how to play in the non-existent mod is pretty much how I play anyway. Good thing I don’t play ranked games, I guess.

Individual units are a bit pointless. You can’t balance them because you don’t know what other units are involved.

The only place they fit in is as part of an entire mod. TA had tons of them. Few were remotely balanced because experts weren’t playing them in multiplayer. Like Supcom you won’t know whats imbalanced until the game has been really extensively playtested by hundreds of really good players.

You need that critical mass of people. And not just any players. Quality players. I don’t see how any mod is going to get a dedicated following that really test it. Maybe you’ll get one or two. But certainly not many.

Well, there have been other new fanmade units already but those were of the “copy-paste-code-enlarge-this-model-or-that-and-add-other-existing-weapon-effect-on-it” kind (which doesn’t have to be bad of course, a T3 turret with the ML laser is always cool to watch). Once there is a better(?) modeler import tool (fanmade, GPG can’t do sh*t here because of licensing issues) and the modding improvements of the next patch are in place, things will go a lot smoother I guess.

GPG will release unit addons, but when and how many is unknown, though they’ll definitely be free I think. I also don’t think they’ll come with the next patch but it would be a nice surprise if they did though.

hey glad to hear most of you dont like my model, just a few things really to clear up,

yes i know it doesn’t fit with supcom, but its not ment to, i just wanted to show those interested that we can get models ingame with textures.

the mod itself will be space based and a total conversion.

keep an eye for more though, i plan on the mod being of the highest quality
