SupComTalk first inaugural open thread

We’re starting to get a fairly regular stream of readers (and more importantly commenters) now, so I think it’s time to open up the floor a bit. If you have anything to say related to Supreme Commander, speak your mind here. This is an open thread. It can be any random observation of the game, a re-telling of some tense and frenetic multiplayer experience, even some SupCom humor if you’re so inclined; whatever other people might be interested in. This is a good opportunity to talk about topics that aren’t big enough to get their own post. Ask questions of your fellow readers.

Oh, and this is your place to make suggestions about the future of this blog and any topics you’d like to see being covered that we haven’t gotten around to yet. I like to think we do a fairly good job with the writing, but we can also use more help in generating ideas to write about.

I’d like to see what are the opinions of the GPG devs on the official forums about the current balance issues. Could you do a post about “GPG’s answers to the community” ?

    thanks!

Is it possible that a few of the readers or commentors could get together for a game? A nice large free for all might be fun. We could then use the replay to discuss and learn from eachothers mistakes and triumphs. This game reminds me a lot of the board game “Go”. It is more about personal development and the challenge of getting better than simply having a high rank - or it is so for me. I enjoy the complexity as a challenge, even if most players end up at the same type of strategy, such as the t3 bot column, but I would love to be the first to invent a strategy that only lets the players watch (in awe).

If so, it might be best to play a time via a chat room of some sorts, a spam of comments/threads may create confusion. I for one am by no means the best player, I bounce between the 2-3 thousands back up to the 8 thousands depending on the mood/streak I am on. I will give you a fight though, I don’t like to go down easily. I can host also, I’m on one of the fastest connections in the world currently.

    In response to Maelos:
That would probably be fun. I must warn you that CydeWeys and I are both pretty good! Unfortunately for me, I have a rather crappy computer, and don’t want to bog down everyone else. Any battle with more than 4 players will probably be too much for me.

    In response to sylvinus:
I perhaps don’t read the forums as often as I should, but by and large the official GPG response to the balance issues has been very muted. We will know a lot more once the big patch comes out in about 2 weeks (barring any delays).

  4. Uberrated Says:

I really enjoyed the replay breakdowns. Generally I would enjoy great replays being linked/posted.

  5. jakx Says:

    ^^^ i agree with uberrated

  6. Cyde Weys Says:

Game developers in general are very muted about upcoming balance changes. You’d never see Blizzard talking about how some classes are going to be buffed (and others nerfed) before it actually happens, for instance. It probably keeps their hassle to a minimum this way. Especially because things are liable to change at the last second if they discover some unforseen balance issue; you could end up with lots of pissed off fans who were counting on one thing that was “promised” that didn’t end up being delivered.

One thing that i would love is to see more players become aware that you do not need an uber low ping to play supreme commander. the number of times i get kicked because “my ping is too high”….Grrrr

Now my ping is crap i agree. 300 typically, sometimes 350, maybe even upto 400 here and there. My point is that when ive found a game i dont get kicked out of and we start playing, it plays fine. no lag issues at all. happens everytime.

This game is more dependent on PC speed than a very low ping. Im on a core2-6400, 2GB ram, 6600GT (yeah i know this card aint the best) and mainly i have all settings as low as possible. it runs the game not too bad at all.

in an FPS you need as low a ping as possible. its a lot more relaxed in RTS games.
just wish some of those “omg your ping isn’t under 100″ people would realise this.

anyway thats my opinion and findings, what do other people feel on the ping issue?

Don’t really have much to say right now. Just wanted to post a comment to let you guys know this is a daily read for me.

  9. sylvinus Says:

will someone work on a “quick balance fix” mod ? Shouldn’t be that hard to tweak a few units here and there to make the cybrans playable and fuck up those t3 uef gunships.. ?

  10. Will (Green) Says:

I’m actually looking forward to the upcoming nerf of Aeon. Prior to reading online about other people playing, I played as Aeon and I like them, but I kind of feel bad about it because *everybody* plays Aeon.
    Does that make sense?

  11. Maelos Says:

    to Grokmoo:
I am also an experienced player. I held steady against Cyde for at least two of his three waves, though his third crushed me. I have much to learn, but I will give you a fight. Perhaps we can set something up between the three of us sometime. I am busy but a planned game would be workable.

  12. Jester Says:

So this is definitely a daily read for me. I think the worst possible thing this site could do is go for “mass appeal”. It’s not a news site nor a replay vault nor a public forum. It’s a haven for intelligent commentary on one of the best strategy games ever. Stick to your guns. You’re doing a great job; this place rules. :)

  13. Cyde Weys Says:

Of course it’s not a replay vault and I don’t intend to convert it into one, but … you don’t like my analyses of replays? (Or did I misinterpret you?) I was thinking that was one of the best features I had going. Lots of people are downloading and watching those replays and reading along in the summary.

  14. Jester Says:

My bad. That was a little unclear. I like the replay reviews you guys are doing, mostly because they support commentary on what to do and not to do strategically. Once again, because it’s intelligent commentary. But I stopped paying attention to gamereplays because people would post a replay with a question, only to have fourteen morons pointing out everything wrong with their playstyle and never addressing the question. I think that’s what I meant by a replay vault.

  15. Ryuken Says:

Like everything about the site until now, but how’s the SupCom-wiki going? I read somewhere on the official boards there are several wiki’s but all of them not just that complete yet so one of the creators asked for one big wiki.

And if you guys could, some Q&A with GPG would be awesome (can be about everything SupCom-related; how the sales were going, what’ll be in store for GPGnet or the unit packs, what user mods they’ve liked themselves already, etc.)

  16. igaude Says:

A word to say “thanks”, this blog is a daily reading.
I like very much the “Map profile” idea : having all the ranked maps debriefed this way would be great, especially if you deliver a short list of interesting and commented replays showing efficient/most common tactics for each map (to add practical examples to theory).
    Keep up !

  17. BLITZ_Molloy Says:

It’s an excellent blog. I think you’re getting a nice balance of replay strategy breakdowns, balance discussion and other stuff. It’s nice to see a news site that approaches things from a multiplayer focussed perspective.

I think I’d like to see a few interviews with GPG staff as well. Get them to talk about what they’re allowed to talk about. No need to press them with a hundred questions like “Whens the addon pack coming” “No comment” type of thing. There are lots of interesting things they are permitted to discuss. Concentrate on those.

I’d also like to see a few interviews with the likes of Unconq and Echez. You can’t beat commentary from people who actually know what they’re doing. Maybe a joint interview with Mentel and Unconq about the 2vs2 ladder?

  18. Jotto Says:

Ryuken’s comment reminded me, you need to advertise for the Wiki more Cyde :P

But more seriously, its really starting to take shape I think, so making a post here asking for articles, or even just suggestions for articles, would be a good idea right now. We need more wiki!
