Gender issues and SupCom

Following the age demographics poll from three days ago, which confirmed my suspicions that the majority of the readers on this site are young but not too young (70% between 18 and 34), I have another question to ask: how many of you are females? I would honestly be surprised if the answer were more than, say, 5%. But hey, this is an issue I’m hoping to be surprised on.

I bring up this question because I saw my sister yesterday and was trying to explain what I’m doing with this blog (she’s never heard of Supreme Commander) when I remembered that she played Total Annihilation along with my dad and me way back in the day. So I asked her what she remembered of Total Annihilation and she responded, “Big Bertha”. If you’re only going to remember a few units from TA, Big Bertha definitely isn’t a bad one to choose. So anyway, back to the question: are you male or female? I’m not going to have an “Other” option because I fear the number of joke respondents for that would be higher than the number of valid respondents, so please, just answer the poll question with whatever gender you identify as.

How often are you still playing Supreme Commander?

My suspicions that this isn’t a good place to hang out and pick up women have been confirmed. Thats it. I’m off to groom some underage girls on Myspace.

Those 3% (at the time of this posting) are lying. Everyone knows there are no girls on the internet.
And certainly none playing a Chris Taylor RTS.

a_Tick: Don’t be silly. There are actually more women on the Internet than men. Have you ever seen MySpace, for instance? It’s just that, when it comes to hardcore real time strategy games, most women stay away.

  4. Will (green) Says:

That hardly counts. MySpace is a *social networking* site. Women have a million years of social networking practice and this allows us and them to do it instantly, with little hassle, and with less physical interaction.

  5. Cyde Weys Says:

Why doesn’t it count? There are more women on the Internet than men overall. That’s a simple irrefutable statistic; it came out in a recent study. MySpace is but one example of many. There are also more women than men playing casual multiplayer games. You know, stuff like Hearts, Bridge, Monopoly, etc.

Am I the 4%? …I feel so alone

  7. Genna Says:

Fear not Enrald, there are SOME of us here *comforts Enrald*

  8. Cyde Weys Says:

Do you two know each other? You’re coming across on the exact same IP address, which could hardly be a coincidence …

  9. faker_phil Says:

    haha, busted! ^^

  10. Cyde Weys Says:

Well, for all we know, they’re sisters. Or roommates. Who both just happen to read the same blog.

  11. faker_phil Says:

    Maybe.

  12. Genna Says:

We share the same computer, uni students in the UK actually :)

  13. Keri Says:

No girls play A CT RTS? ORLLY. I’d kick your ass at TA. Probably not at SupCom tho as I’m n00bish at that game. Keri = Ta_Girl. Ex Boneyard colonel :P
