Engine optimizations in the mid-April patch confirmed

Squidbot has just confirmed that the next patch will include many engine optimizations. This means that SupCom will run faster, especially on lower end computers. He also explained the perceived delay on the patch saying, “One of the reasons the patch has been so long in coming is some of the optimizations are relatively ‘radical’ so a lot of testing was required.” While I’m not happy that the patch isn’t out yet, anything that increases performance is worth the wait!

And for those of you who log onto GPGnet twenty times a day just to see if the new patch has arrived yet, Squidbot had this to say: “Our patch is code complete, so the time frame will be determined by how testing and bug fixing goes. That’s the best estimate ‘hint’ I can give.” Good news all around!

Can’t wait, any performance improvements are good!

  2. Rhysin Says:

Very good news. I forsee the next batch of disks will have this built in, to boast ‘improved performance.’

I can’t wait for the new patch! And yes, I have been logging in twenty times a day. How did YOU know?

  4. T2A` Says:

Awesome. It’d be nice if I could play on something other than minimal settings!

Sweet. Now the waiting involves waiting for C2D and/or video card prices to drop. I can almost detect it with all my senses.

    Great news! :)

  7. Wuped Says:

Sweet, maybe I can boost my settings now.

hahah i also have been loging on 20 times a day…i cant wait !!!!

Doctor Dan over at the GPG forums also confirmed that there will be “quite a few” balance issues addressed in this upcoming patch. This is the first big patch since the game came out, with goodies for everyone. Numerous game optimizations along with numerous balance issues solved, I can’t wait :).

“Quite a few balance issues addressed” = Aeon getting hit with the nerf stick, big time. Sad but true. At least maybe the 1v1 ladder will be slightly more interesting now.

  11. Wuped Says:

Cyde Weys: Maybe you think it’s sad but true since you play Aeon but for us Cybran and UEF players it’s good news (:

  12. faker_phil Says:

Wuped: Except that they’ll probably nerf the Cybran TML, too :)

  13. Archonis Says:

I feel that Aeon does need to balanced, or at least some of the races need to be given enhancements to properly balance them with the Aeon. As it stands, it’s unfair playing against any Aeon player.

  14. Whatever Says:

Actually Aeons are the underdogs- Their land units are weak and hard to control. Sea units have a totally secondary usage since you can not resource over the water. I believe that the patch will unbalance the game, just because one faction is slightly different, more popular and have better players.

  15. T2A` Says:

Roughly 50% of all online players use Cybran (going by a poll on GPG’s forums). Addi tonally, the Aurora is not weak. It has less health, sure, but it also has the ability to float, a long range, and can fire while strafing/going backwards. Its acceleration got bumped up with the new patch so it’s probably even easier to dodge artillery with it. I haven’t any real experience with their v3223 T2 units but their mobile shield had 600 more health than the UEF’s, the Harbinger was a beast that could reclaim, and their mobile artillery is the only one that can shoot while moving. That doesn’t exactly scream “weak” to me.

I do, however, understand what you’re worrying about. Aeon have always been good at just being direct and powerful whilst other factions go for splash, size, or extra functionality. A lot of the whining by non-Aeon players was probably unfounded. Just because the top players use Aeon doesn’t mean the other factions are weak, per se. I guess we’ll just have to see how many of the top players switch factions, because that may be a sign of too big a nerf.
