Open thread – demographics

This is an open thread just like any other. Except, if you can’t think of anything else to comment about, take a look at SupComTalk’s recent demographics polls:

Assuming that this site’s readers are a representative sampling of the game’s players as a whole, what are the implications? Or might this site’s readership be skewed in some way, and how?

Nothing really to drive discussion in those results… they’re pretty much what would be expected: Almost entirely male and containing slightly more adults than most other RTS games due to the TA fanbase from ten years ago and the slightly steeper learning curve and grander scale of the game compared to other RTS games available that would attract more of the younger crowd.

You know what this blog needs… Trolls so we can all make fun of them. Any volunteers?

Advertising this blog more on GPGnet forums would bring enough trolls =)

    Feature suggestion: Quoting (!)

  4. Hipsu Says:

I’d like to have a girlfriend that plays Supreme Commander :).

    …actually I’d be happy to have just a girlfriend…

  5. Molloy Says:

Younger player can’t afford machines to play this game on, and women wouldn’t be inclined to pay for them.

  6. Cyde Weys Says:

Yeah, we really don’t need any trolls. If I see any popping up, I’ll deal with them swiftly and harshly. As for quoting, I don’t know, I considered it at some point. But unless discussions get really long and really multi-threaded, I don’t really see a use for it. It would just make comments that used quoting take up more screen real estate when instead you could just scroll up a little (or flick your eyeballs up) to read the comment that is being replied to.

But the way things are going, and with threads getting rather long, I guess it may make sense to add a quote button.

  7. Unconquerable Says:

I bet you those who voted women are acutally guys

  8. Cyde Weys Says:

Unconq: Yeah, but why would a guy lie about being a girl? I mean, I understand doing that in WoW to get free gold, but what does one have to gain by lying here?

  9. Wuped Says:

@Cyde Weys, because it’s the internet.

  10. Cyde Weys Says:

Wuped: If anything, being on the Internet would mean that those claiming to be guys are actually girls. There are now more women on the Internet than men. Please, can we kill off this silly old stereotype that only males use the Internet. It’s simply not true.

  11. Sub Says:

Sure, there are more females on the ‘net than males, but I doubt those females are playing Supcomm. The results seem pretty accurate to me.

  12. Cyde Weys Says:

I think we’re going in circles here. I started off by saying that few females are playing SupCom :-/

  13. Molloy Says:

I see gamers as gamers. Who gives a shit if they’re male or female?

  14. Will (Green) Says:

I got my ex-girlfriend to play the first few missions in the UEF campaign. She said the game was too complicated, but she hasn’t sworn it off.

  15. Cyde Weys Says:

Molloy: But male gamers cannot reproduce with other male gamers. So it matters, if for no other reason than where the future generations of gamers will come from.

Heh sorry I spend to much time on internet forums.

  17. Molloy Says:

Women just aren’t as predisposed to liking competitive games as men are. That’s why you get few if any world class Chess or Go players. That isn’t going to change.
