All the mod news that’s fit to print
A lot is going on in the mod community, and those crazy helpful GPG employees are posting like mad, so heres a quick rundown of whats going on with those crazy modders and mappers.
O has just confirmed that replays storing chat is planned, though it won’t be in the next patch. For anyone interested in writing any sort of replay parser, he also promised to look into adding more header information to replay files.
SCA UI mod V 2.0 has just been released, with many new features. Its also now the first third party UI that has minimap support. Not that anyone uses the minimap anyway!
DeathRay2K’s Mod Vault program is now up to version 0.5.4, and, with the last few patches, has become almost fully web integrated, allowing authors to edit, update, delete, and upload their mods.
For fans of Starcraft and Warcraft III Use Map Settings maps, aka custom maps, there’s good news. At least three separate maps are in development, including a Tower Defense map I am coding, a Footman Frenzy-style map, and seemingly a Defense of the Ancients-style map. And all of this is being done before the official map editor has been released!
I’d also like to hear from you all what kinds of mod and map news you’re interested in. So far in these two mod news posts I’ve done I’ve tried to do a little bit of everything, but if people are mostly interested in, for example, third party units or third party mpas, I’d try to focus on those a little more, and add more links to any good releases I see.

I personally am interested in units and any new factions that are in development. I’d like to hear more about those types of things.

Man, that’s the first I’ve heard of a tower defense map/mod for SupCom. That sounds exceedingly awesome–SupCom is perfect for tower defense, what with the physics simulation.

Looking forward to tower defense. :)
Also the two best mods, imho, are Sorian’s merged AI (merged w/ Giskard’s) and the Saya/Cleopatre UI mod 2.0. They’re the only two I use consistently, because they don’t really ADD anything to the game so much as IMPROVE two key aspects: the UI and the AI.
I look forward to giskard getting back in the game after the big patch is released so his portion of the AIs in the merged pack will finally get updated. At least Sorian has kept things going and his 1.5b (latest) AI is very good.

Zechirian: “All the news that’s fit to print” is a popular newspaper slogan from the New York Times that dates back to 1896. It is frequently parodied and paid homage to. I don’t see how this has anything to do with Bluesnews, who are merely one of many co-opting the NYT’s slogan.

I was trying to see where NYT got it from, but didn’t see anything.
Wikipedia has this to say: “The New York Times was aquired by Adolph Ochs, publisher of The Chattanooga Times, in 1896. In 1897, he coined the paper’s celebrated slogan, “All The News That’s Fit To Print,” widely interpreted as a jab at competing papers in New York City (the New York World and the New York Journal American) that were known for lurid yellow journalism.”

Will: It’s quite possible that they made it up themselves.

I’m intrigued as to how well Tower Defence will work in SupCom. I’ve played TD maps on various games, and ultimately I think Warcraft 3 comes out best from all of them, even from the more modern games. Its low system specs means anyone can play, it has a resource system which is easy to give resources for kills, and has a variety of towers/animations/monsters already included. The armour/weapon system also adds a great deal of depth to TD maps which is currently lacking in SupCom. Personally I can’t see SupCom TD maps being able to compete with WC3 TD maps in both quantity and quality.
