Monday blues SupComTalk open thread
Tis an open thread like any other, but with a bonus optional topic of discussion: Which custom map archetypes are you looking forward to being ported over into Supreme Commander from previous games? There’s a lot of great stuff from WarCraft III and StarCraft that can be implemented in Supreme Commander as soon as the new patch, with all of its map modding features, comes out.

I am looking forward to the “use map settings” type stuff coming up. I think it should be interesting to be able to run multiple player campaigns. Or “turbo games” or other popular starcraft style games. Turret Defense would be interesting, but I dont see how that could work. Perhaps it will. Anyways… its exciting for sure.

Aside from items that are essentially total conversions (like Tower Defense games), I would like to see some new gametypes like capture the flag.
I would also greatly appreciate having the feature from TA that allowed the player to restrict any unit or structure, but add to that the option to restrict all T4/X items, or all T3 & T4/X items.
Add this functionality also to skirmish mode. That would be much appreciated.
I’d love to see how the game plays out without T3 SABs.
It would also be a very useful function for folks building mods and TCs (Total Conversions).

Tower Defence would be excellent.

Jay: Without siege assault bots, I would imagine SCUs would be even more over-used. Turn off SCUs as well and I think you would finally see some interesting dynamic combat. Tech 3 mobile artillery would end up becoming very important. Aeon would get a huge advantage because their artillery can fire on the move, making it much much better against other mobile units (as it doesn’t have to stop, sit still, and take damage just to kill stuff). In artillery duels, the one that can somehow remain mobile should win.

I don’t think I can want a certain type of game. I just want to see alot of originality and thought go into some custom maps.

Will: http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/ and http://novelconcepts.co.uk/FlashElementTD/ are good examples of what a tower defense map is like.

Tower Defense, I think, was originally a warcraft map where you build towers and defend from incoming enemies.
It’s been remade in flash form:

I’d love to see a WWII map, there was a great one made for starcraft way back when.

I personally would love to see a remake of a map I worked on for WarCraft III called Trench Warfare. It was kind of like DotA, but the really cool feature was that you could spend your accumulated money on spawn buildings that would give the AI more and more powerful units. This was a long, long time ago, when WarCraft III was relatively new. DotA wasn’t nearly as big then as it is now.

Just a thought, are you ever gonna make a Supreme Commander talk clan? I would join.

That would be like a news show having it’s own army.
But wouldn’t that be a conflict of interest? Or something?

I’d just like to see some cleverly balanced asymmetrical maps that offer particularly interesting uses of differing terrain and such :)
