Kudos to the GPG forum moderators

We’re always quick to criticize when something goes wrong, but not so quick to give praise where it is due. Consider this the exception. A week and a half ago, controversy erupted over threads being deleted from the forums. Folks fled the official forum for other fansites, including this one, where they could discuss the matter in freedom without worrying about their comments being deleted, which was still ongoing at the official forum. I wrote a rather long essay on how to manage online communities, which I linked from the official forums.

Luckily, the moderators appear to have listened to my advice, as the controversy has disappeared in the intervening period. As far as we know, valid threads are no longer being deleted. Instead, we’ve seen forum moderators locking threads (with explanations). This is far, far preferred, as comments are not being deleted. So anyway, kudos to GPG for handling moderation on their forum better. Now, if only they could somehow raise the overall quality level of it …

The only way this is going to happen is to actively moderate the forum. Right now I’m not seeing that in the forums.
