Keeping your commander safe

I cannot reiterate enough how important it is to keep your commander safe (in assassination games, anyway). At around the ten minute mark your commander needs to come off the front lines and head to safety, because your opponent will be gunning for him. If you are within tactical missile range of your opponent, build tactical missile defenses in your base to cover your commander. At around the twenty minute mark you need to start thinking of further protecting your commander, so get that personal shield upgrade to boost your commander’s puny 10,000 hit points (or if you are Cybran, go for the cloaking device to hide from danger). Also, make sure he’s sitting underneath a shield. On water maps, put your commander under water, where he is safe from strategic bombers, but don’t forget tech 2 torpedo launchers to protect him from submarines.

I played a game earlier today where my opponent made the crucial mistake of leaving his commander vulnerable on the front lines. I didn’t do anything fancy like hit him with tactical missiles. I just used brute force. His defenses were pretty strong, and the siege bots I had weren’t going to destroy them. But thanks to siege assault bots’ excellent survivability and capability for overrunning opponents, I didn’t need to destroy his defenses. I only needed to run through them and survive long enough to kill his commander, which was (unfortunately for him) sitting in his firebase. Since I wasn’t playing Aeon (the only faction whose siege bots can reclaim), walls could have helped him a lot. But even more so would have been moving his commander somewhere safe. Update: Okay, so apparently I was playing Aeon, and walls wouldn’t have helped very much. Whoops.

Sorry to ask, but is this the right replay? I noticed in your post you said you weren’t playing Aeon, but in this replay (a 2vs2) you are playing Aeon. Since this is my first time posting, I wanted to say you are an awesome player Cyde Weys, definitely one of the best I’ve seen. I check this site multiple times a day to see what I can learn from the replays you post.

Cyde your ACU was not very well defended either…. >_>

Yeah, looks like the wrong replay (you certainly were Aeon). The final opponent had a TML and your ACU was close by without TMD. That replay, like so many, shows how bad the Cybran T2 PD sucks against SABs.

This game could have ended very differently..
Yellow had a wide opportunity to include Cyde’s 30%HP ACU in the death blast before he ran away, and if Blue assisted his TML could have easily sniped Green’s ACU that was parked out in the middle area.

Feral: I was being very careful with my commander during that assault to make sure that he stayed clear of any possible exploding enemy commander.

“This game could have ended differently..” if his opponents were better, but I’m pretty sure Cyde had a good idea what he was up against. Sure sending his commander in the guys base in a game of commander chicken was a bit risky, but I personally thought it was awesome, plus he was keeping his distance and a watchful eye on his ACU’s health. He probably would not have gotten eeepp out of the battle so quickly had he not done this.

After watching closer it wasn’t as wide as I thought, only from 11:19 - 11:32 were you well within the blast zone & under 40% HP (the dmg amount)
I made this image to illustrate the effect zones:-

What I was refering to not being very carefull with his commander was after SABs started showing up not when Cyde com rushed which was a pretty good move. Atleast his ACU had PD infront of it. (:
