Pre-patch jitters open thread

Tis an open thread like every other! Feel free to talk about anything on your mind, though I presume that many people are going to particularly want to talk about the (apparently) imminent patch. Oh, and we haven’t announced this explicitly yet, so here it is: GPG has canceled development on the DirectX 10 patch indefinitely. Bummer. And from what I’ve heard, it was a promised eventual feature at launch, so that’s not good. Your thoughts on this matter?

Oh, and one more topic to discuss if you find all of the others non-starters and you aren’t a self-starter: how do we fix the terrible gender ratio in this game? Or do we just give up? Is Supreme Commander a game that appreciable numbers of females will ever want to play?

I am glad they canceled DirectX 10 support. I doubt very much that DX10 support would in any way enhance the game for the vast majority of players, who wouldn’t have the hardware or software to support it. It is a damn shame that GPG fell into Microsoft’s marketing hype and wasted resources on trying to implement it though. It would have been nice if a few of the little annoyances that now plague people would have been fixed by release day.

  2. JRPereira Says:

I don’t have any problems with the lack of DX10 support. There won’t be a real market for DX10 games for a long time.

As far as the patch is concerned, my biggest fear is that the performance updates won’t be significant or appreciable in any way. The balance changes are nice and all, but it’s hard to enjoy the game when it slows down to a crawl and doesn’t even run well from the start. Once the game slows down even more though, people start to get tunnel vision and stop focusing on strategic decisions.

I don’t care about DX10, I think they have a lot of things far more important to do, I don’t get why ppl are complaining about it.
As for girls playing supcom. I know it’s cliche but it’s normal that not a lot of girls play it. Little girls don’t play GI Joe, grown up girls don’t play supcom either. My gf is not allergic to video games, she’s played the sims and recently desperate housewives but she still doesn’t understand what’s interesting about a war of robots (who said dots? :) ).
To answer your question, I’d say “give up”.

  4. Molloy Says:

I’d echo what everybody else says there. Couldn’t give a toss about DX10.

The only way you’re going to get lots of girl gamers is if you find a woman to copulate with and raise the female child as an Aeon. I already tried my best to encourage this in my first SupCom How To.

Girls don’t traditionally like war games man. It’s not a new phenomenon. Or something you can fix.

As they say “If women ran the world there would be no war.” Pff.. yeah. Because women never start an argument about nothing.

“Hello. This is Ireland. Why are you invading me?”

“Oh, I think you know why.”

  5. Black Angel Says:

Agreed, DX10 is a waste of time and money at this point in the industry and enabling support for it will irritate more people than it will please and ultimately be worthless.

And yes, the reason there are next to no female Supcom players is because women genuinely find war to be completely unentertaining. Actually the reason there would be no war if women ran the world is because whenever a woman is offended by someone, rather than seek bloody retribution like we men do, they usually express it by going behind that person’s back and “hating on them.” Besides, since most women are under the impression that war is a shovenistic masculine creation, they wouldn’t engage in it under feministic principle. The only way to get women to play Supcom would be to hire Hugh Jackman, Matthew Mcconaughey and Johhny Depp to do all the voiceovers.

I wonder what the #1 modification one could make to Supreme Commander would be if you didn’t care at all about preserving the spirit of the game, just attracting female gamers?

  8. Wuped Says:

I don’t know what you mean about no females playing. I know alot of SupCom girls who I play with, one of them who I think could beat me. (:

  9. Molloy Says:

    That’s easy Cyde Weys.

“Both sides lay in ruins. Their civilizations had long since vanished, their once vast military complexes were smashed. Their armies were reduced to a few scattered remnants, which continued to battle on ravaged worlds. Their hatred fueled by millenia of conflict, they would fight to the death. For the Care Bears and The My Little Ponies, the only acceptable outcome was the complete and utter annihilation of the other.

  10. 54pikachus Says:

lol molloy i thought you were gonna say “Their armies were reduced to a few scattered remnants, which needed cleaning up”

    DX10 patch – couldn’t care less.
Bug fixes, AI improvements, balance changes – looking forward to.

    Classic. Ten Points for Molloy.

  13. diotoxx Says:

I think DX10 would be a waste of dev time and resources. Supcom seems to have a rather small development team and I would prefer they spend their time working on features and improvements that most if not all of the small playerbase will benefit from.

  14. Fiendicus Prime Says:

The DX10 canceling is cheeky – GpG got a lot of publicity because they were going to be one of the first DX10 games. Theoretically, it would have been really good, because there are enhancements in DX10 which should increase performance by 10-20%. However, these have yet to be realized in any game (e.g. Lost Planet, which is 20% slower in DX10), so perhaps they are right to dump it.

  15. T2A` Says:

I think PC gaming will be dead long before DX10 catches on as the norm.

I’m really looking forward to the patch for the rebalances and optimizations. Maybe I’ll get more than 10 FPS! I can’t wait for the first person to cry that Aeon are still OP after the patch. That’ll just show people that they were never OP to begin with and everyone’s just a bunch of whiners. ^___^

As far as the gender ratio, girls and computer games don’t go together. Sure, a fair number of girls may play Halo, but it’s pretty rare to find a PC gaming human with a vagina. A computer to a lot of women is just a big instant messaging device. If GPG turned Supreme Commander into Supreme MySpace War I think it’d attach girls. Nothing fuels a female’s rage more than spreading drama and poorly-taken pictures of themselves.

  16. Dx10hater Says:

T2A that was a Chauvinistic comment! Many women play computer games! I am deeply offended and… HAHA just messing with you…. Im a guy… Damn straight on the myspace comment….

  17. TheRivieraKid Says:

My misses used to love playing Dungeon Keeper – thats not too different from SupCom is it?… Still, all she plays now is The Sims and minesweeper. I guess the difference is war/ fantasy. Strategy is not the problem. Dungeon Keeper wasn’t so much a war but Sim City. anyway, dunno what i’m talking about. I can’t wait for DX10…

  18. Keri Says:

I prefer playing RTS. I have played most since DuneII. However as I get older I find the problem is time. It’s OK against the ai, I just save, but online is totally different, I just can’t find the time to play enough. Consequently online playing skillz are un1337. Social life is more important to me than being number 1 with a game. I suspect most women find the same. While I dont use myspace, a lot do and it IS social to them.
