The maps you have to download
The Map Vault, released in the latest GPGnet patch, already has lots of great maps uploaded to it despite the absence of an official map editor (and by the way, wasn’t that supposed to be released by now?). Unfortunately, the Map Vault doesn’t integrate into the rest of GPGnet in any meaningful manner, so if you try to join a custom game on a custom map that you don’t have, rather than having the option to download it right there, you have to exit the game lobby, open up the Map Vault, search for the map, download it, and then hastily get back into the game lobby, hopefully before the game has launched.
Thus it would be a good idea to go to the Map Vault and download all of the popular maps now so you’re ready to play a custom game on a custom map at any time, rather than being shut out from it because you didn’t already have the map. Here are some recommendations of good maps that you should definitely download:
- Zone Control
- Summer Duel
- Battle Isles
I haven’t played too many custom maps yet because of my absence on vacation, but I’m definitely looking forward to playing a lot of them. A good quick way to find other maps worth downloading is to use the Map Vault’s predefined searches for Most Downloaded and Top Rated maps. Just get the top ten maps in both categories and you should be ready to rock and roll in the majority of custom games on custom maps.
Oh, and if you have any worthwhile custom maps that I’ve missed, please do tell me about them in the comments.

How do you get them if you cant reach the vault?

Summer Duel is not bad, I’m just not a huge fan. It’s too small for the multiple-approach feel, and yet, too large for a ‘true’ quick game, in my opinion.
But Zone Control is pretty sweet..

Marinus: I’m not having any problems reaching the vault, are you? Does GPGnet in general work for you?

Shore to Shore for those of you who played TA
and Ocean Fortress (supports up to 2v2v2v2) on a 20×20 can make some good naval battles and supports underwater mass extractorx/hydro plants (which can be torpedoed)
