A few things to know about disconnects in ranked games
Buried deep in the GPGnet forums are some hidden treasures. A case in point is this thread, created by SonOfShagrat. In the thread, Shagrat gives several useful tips involving how to handle disconnects in ranked games. You can read the thread for all the details, but I’ll summarize the most useful points here.
Basically, some players attempt to abuse the GPG ranking system by disconnecting their internet connection when about to lose a game. If the other player doesn’t know how to handle this, there is a good chance that the disconnecting player will receive a draw or even a win, rather than the loss that they deserve.
Basically, there are two things you should always remember when you see the disconnect dialog in a ranked game:
- When exiting a ranked game, always wait for the score button to appear, and use it to exit the game. Do not hit escape and select exit.
- Wait at least a minute before kicking your opponent when the disconnect dialog appears. This helps to prevent your opponent disconnecting and then quickly reconnecting, which can make it appear to the score report system that you were the one who disconnected.
If you follow these two rules, you will be much less vulnerable to dishonest players attempting to abuse the score report system.

I saw that thread a while ago… I screamed. I think I probably had 30 or so games not count because of this.
