Ode to open threads open thread
This open thread is an ode to open threads. Do what you usually do in open threads, but if you could be musical about it, that’d be great.
As for the semi-structured topic of this open thread (though of course you’re welcome to sing about anything else), the choice is obvious: the recent patch. Having an open thread for everyone to chew the post-patch tender, juicy meat and fibrous, stringy gristle in is quickly becoming a SupComTalk tradition. As is a poll. But just to break tradition, there will be no poll this time (though I will lie about it).

I say yes just because the desync exploit is very serious if it ever got it SupCom community would be in trouble…. Good thing I am a nice person and reported it to SoS (:

Wuped: Yeah, but GPG could have issued a very minor patch to simply remove that force desync console command without having to invalidate saved games and replays. I guess what the poll is asking is if the balance changes are worth the emptying of the replay vault.

I don’t check out replays that much, and it’s not like it won’t fill up quickly anyway. I didn’t care much, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t worth the change for heavy replay watchers.

Since it’s only been a short time since v3254, I don’t see the problem. Now, if they had waited as long as they did to get to v3251 and only had such a short list of changes then it’d be bad and everyone would be pissed. As it stands now they only lost relatively few replays.
On the other hand, all these constant changes aren’t doing any good for my want to play the game. Every time I start thinking I know what’s going on the game gets changed around.

replays arent realy worth it they are only good if u know ur gonna play someone!! and u know the map ur gonna play on so u can see what they have done in the past and then know how to counter it…. OR u realy wanna watch some of the better players go @ it
and if u wanna watch the better players then it would proberly be best anyway that the vault was emptied as then the older replays are gone and the newer ones with sometimes VERY diffrenet tatics (because of the patch changes) are uploaded to give players more ‘current’ tatics ETC
srry train of thought got derailed… (@ work and work stuff happening@!)

The replays become worthless once there are balance changes anyway. What are you going to learn from them. And player skill is improving all the time so no matter how audatious a new trick or technique is it’s likely you’ll all the other top 10 players pulling it off later on.
To be honest, before the last major optimisation/balance patch the replay vault was getting rather stale. The same replays were at the Top Downloaded and Top Rated for a month and a half. Clearing it out did it no harm at all.

I can’t even find a download site for the new patch.
There should definately be backwards compatibility for old saves and replays. The might be useless for learning, but it’s terrible to lose that really fun replay.

Maybe we need an Open thread to complain about how many Open threads we have. ok, ok, maybe that was a little harsh. I think it doesn’t really matter for the same reason stated above. And as long as your gonna throw out a desync fix why not give those UEF AA units some killing power. Now my T3 AA and cruisers can actually kill stuff. it sucks having T3 bombers drop their bombs before their dead and destroying your T3 AA thus allowing more bombers. their still no where near as effective as Myrmidons(which is fine) and thier about on par with the Aeon T3 AA

What would be really great is an official replay watcher. I think I saw it suggested somewhere else, but its still a good idea. The replay watcher would support all the different patch levels. And what the heck, why not make it a free optional component? Kind of let anybody in the world download it, and watch some replays. That way they can see how awesome SupCom is, and its alot better than simple screenshots and reviews.

That would be really difficult to do without the engine, and all of the data anyway. You’d have to basically take the 6GB that is SupCom, strip out the network and campaign code and files, and then recompile the whole thing to a nice, hefty 5.9GB.
Now, if you were to make a replay viewer that only used the strategic icons and some health bars, why, I bet that would be less than 50MB. There’s no reason for it to be over three or four, except the AI code.

Any idea were we can download the patch?
June 21st, 2007 at 11:36 am
Good changes, but I had to reintall my game for it so maybe they aren’t that good afterall.
June 21st, 2007 at 12:06 pm
I think I found a bug: I was playing against an AI just now, and the UEF battleship wasn’t working against UEF tactical missiles at all. The anti-missile guns were shooting, they were just completely missing.

I think one use of replays people overlook is going back and watching your OWN replays. I save all my ranked match replays, and it’s great to watch and realize what you did if you won, or watch what your opponent did if you lost. I’m slightly perturbed that all my old replays are essentially worthless, but it happens every patch and I get over it and generate some new ones :-)

@Will (green):
For replays to work I believe it has to be rendered using the 3d engine, because the replay only stores input the players give units and buildings, it doesn’t store individual health for each unit or anything. It basically just starts the game from the beginning, using the simulation to tell what lasers hit what, etc. Now what I think WOULD be a pretty good idea, is making a different replay format that JUST stored the movement of strategic icons from a “zoomed-out” perspective. This way, you could fast forward/pause/rewind with no trouble, and see the whole perspective on how a battle went down. It could be similar to the maps of Europe you see on WWII documentaries where it shows the shaded area of the two opponents and how they move/interact.

Well, for the open thread, you ever considered creating a SupCom Talk Clan? So we can compare ourselves to the other fan sites and maybe get some fan site vs fan site friendly games going?
June 22nd, 2007 at 1:40 am
I would like to see some fan site or someone develop a clan for dcent but not-phenomenal players like myself, although I guess the players would get better once they started playing more competitively. I just find myself unable to improve much, since all my ranked matches seem to be either me getting quickly slaughtered or getting paired with some
June 22nd, 2007 at 10:57 am
Speaking of that Baddox, it might be nice if they allowed challenging specific players on the Rankings. Or maybe see if they can change the automatch to only look within X points of your rank, that way you won’t face that player whos 300 or 400 points ahead and get slaughtered.
Course, last night I played someone who was ~150 above and managed to SAB assasinate him. _That_ was pretty fun, seeing as how he probably was going to be coming in swinging right at me in the next few minutes and take me out.
June 22nd, 2007 at 12:27 pm
I actually enjoy playing players ranked way higher then me. I enjoy it more when I win by some miracle.
