Official unit downloads coming August 1?
Those of you who’ve played on GPGnet recently have seen the teaser countdown in the GPGnet header banner rotation. It has a full countdown (including days, hours, minutes, and seconds) to August 1. So what happens on August 1? The only clue we have is the text “You asked for it; they’re coming” (or something to that effect). The only thing I can really think of that fits is official unit downloads. They’ve been most asked for by Supreme Commander fans by far, most likely because they were done with Total Annihilation and everyone has fond memories of that. So I’ll get this rumor out there and say that new official units may be coming on August 1.
Curiously, the countdown seems to have already been removed from the banner rotation on GPGnet; is this a temporary thing, or has the offer been reneged upon? Grrrrr.
And by the way, the next Clan War is coming up on July 8, so sign up through the Tournament interface if you’re interested. The winning clan members get a custom icon they can use in chat. This is as good a prize you’re going to find (short of cash money, anyway), because the vast majority of players are still stuck with the default no award silhouette, and getting an icon you can use in chat definitely helps you stand out. If you care about that, anyway.

nah

Fleabowl!

No T2 Mass Fabricators, please! We need suicide units! Ahaha!
Er, maybe not those (while it would be an interesting idea…). I’d prefer some expansion into T3, to be quite honest, like another airplane, or a T3 submarine.
We only hope. ;)

Additional maps would be desirable as well.
TheCollective15: Only if this T3 submarine is horrendously expensive. Refer to an earlier discussion on submaries.

There are already T3 subs, and since they’re cheaper than they were they’re actually fieldable now. I want to see more radar jamming /counter-intel type things. Maybe a stealth ship for Cybran.

Cavedog released units for TA to counter a gameplay problem.
So, maybe GPG releases anti-subs to counter mass subs, The Can to SABs or a SCU killer \o/

I wonder, do the expansion units come in addition to these? Some people cynically responded that the promised 100 new units would only include 3-5 truly new units per faction, since the new faction needs the basic 80 or so units, and they’re probably right… but if that’s on top of the new units to be released in a month, I’d say that’s not too bad. Well, unless it’ll fuck up the balance, which it probably will, but at least we know GPG listens to our bitching and will fix it asap :)

So would these units be incorporated into the normal game, or would they be more like mods? Would they be usable in ranked games? I hope so.

I was only thinking of something like the Core Leviathan, which is pretty much a super powerful torpedo-only unit. It was the size of a battleship, and only one individual shot could take out an Arm Crusader (their destroyer class unit, which is more comparable to a frigate in SupCom…), while taking about four or five shots to take out an Arm Millennium (their battleship class unit)…although the submarine didn’t have much health. As I recall, it was, indeed, quite expensive…
A stealth ship would be interesting. I remember back in the days when GPG Garage was still active for SupCom fans (and there was a ton of speculation going about…). I had posted about giving the Aeon an invisible battleship as an experimental unit. It could slip into harbors, and be around two or three times as powerful as a regular battleship…it’d be kind of like the Black Pearl from the first Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, sneaking in and decimating a naval outpost, clearing the way for invasion…
Now, of course, things have changed, and the Cybrans have taken on the stealth units…I would be fine with a submarine-hunting sub…they could be more advanced/expensive than the normal T1 subs, but have longer range torpedoes and sonar, but their shots could do less damage, to make them less effective against ships…again, though, this is merely speculation. :)
What do you think about a T3 tank?
June 30th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
i always thought that Cybran should have either stealth T3 mobile arty or stealth T3 SAB. maybe a bot between the armor and firepower of the Rhino and the Loyalist, but with radar stealth. Or a stealth combat vessel would be cool such as followpan suggested.
Btw has anybody noticed that when ordered to move information, UEF and Aeon mobile shields will generally place themselves strategically to cover the group, but cybran mobile stealth will place themselves at the rear, leaving many units exposed?

I have noticed the behaviour of the Cybran mobile stealth when given a formation move command, and how it always ends up at the rear of the group. It’s rather annoying, and it takes some micro to fix that.

Here are a few ideas I’ve had for new units via download or the expansion:
1) T2 subs
2) T3 mobile missile launchers (plus see #7). Gamespot screenie seems to show UEF is getting these.
3) T2 interceptors
4) T2 mass fabs
5) T2 or T3 anti-air ship. This unit is desperately needed. Navies currently get pwned by torpedo bombers and Broadswords. Cruisers are garbage as AA.
6) T2 bombers
7) More T3 combat units - tanks, bots or something! TA had all sorts of interesting T2 units - the Maverick, Goliaths, The Can, the Panther, Mortys, rocket launcher bots, etc. Supcom is really lacking in this area.
8) Tactical missile ship
9) T3 mobile AA.
10) Some sort of anti-shield unit.
11) T3 transports. Larger air drops of high end units should be viable.
12) T3 static ground defense.
13) T2 or T3 anti-sub/anti-torpedo ship
14) Mobile radar jammers or some sort of better stealth unit.
