Reader feedback open thread

Now’s your chance to tell us anything that’s been on your mind. How’s the site been doing? What do you like, and what do you not like? What should we do to make Supreme Commander Talk the best possible Supreme Commander resource for you?

And allow me to briefly hijack this open thread to point you to my frequently updated personal blog Cyde Weys Musings, which you may, perhaps, find interesting.

Does Supreme Commander Talk have too many polls?

I would like to see more replay reviews of lower-ranked players, and tips on how such players could improve. I personally am ranked somewhere in the 2 or 3 thousands, but I still love the intricacies of the game (which is why I love to see and read about top-ranked game replays). I would love to see a call for replays of lower ranked players like myself–I would probably submit one of my replays for review if there’s any more interest.

I definitely agree with Baddox. Being able to have a better player go over our games would be an invaluable resource, and you’ve said many times over that many mistakes noobs make are common to other noobs.
Did I screw that up? It sounds really stupid when I read it…

  3. Total_Inhalation Says:

I agree Baddox. It can actually be more helpful to see replays of players in your own skill level rather than the top ten; that way you will see the strategies and weaknesses of the type of players you will be matched against.

Some of the things that I would like to see:
-More articles on specific aspects of the game like tactics and factional differences. It is clear by the number of posts in “Factional differences in Combat SCUs” that this is something which allot of us take interest in.

-How about an official SCT chat room.

-Contests!! Best screenshot, quickest mavor/soul Ripper etc, Most ridiculous strategy in ranked (extra points if it actually works, but not a requirement) other contest ideas welcome.

-Some community Projects. I don’t know if anyone else here Mods or makes maps though…

And I am considering writing an article for SupComTalk myself. I would like to base my first article on whatever you guys would like to see the most, so give your 2 cents.

  4. Wuped Says:

If you want to see replays of lower end play simply search Cyde Weys replays….. Just kidding (:

  5. Will (green) Says:

Tonight, I am totally going to play my first match online. I hope.

  6. Molloy Says:

Sod replays of bad players. The way you learn is by watching good players and trying to break down how they did well.

  7. AJ Says:

I personally i would like to see a new design something fresh and clean, feature a blue colour scheme, with variations between lighter shades of blue and slightly darker ones, possibly more contests, screenshot competitions, replay of the month etc. and feature more article writers, cover more of SupCom and its universe, cover a lot more on SC:FA and where GPGNet should cocentrate their efforts.

“Sod replays of bad players. The way you learn is by watching good players and trying to break down how they did well.”

That’s not true. The point of replays is to be able to recognize mistakes as much as it is to recognize successes. By seeing mistakes you can come up with fixes to them so you don’t fall victim to them. If you’re a bad player and you only watch top-ten replays and never watch your own because yours are replays of a bad player, you will only see the mistakes the top-ten players make and you will miss your own. It doesn’t matter if you can perfect Unconq’s build order on Open Palms if right after that you make your own usual mistakes because you’ve never learned what they were. I can watch other people’s UT2004 demos all I want, and what they do may or may not seem bad or awesome or obviously flawed. If I never watch my own demos, I would never see the things I’m doing wrong, even if I borrow good tactics from others, and because of that, those good things I noticed probably will never come to fruition for me.

id like to see some replays of the crapper players as well…,. maby a weekly replay post with 4-5 replays and what each player did wrong that REALY screwed them up…
also some of the more basic or outrages tatics… like untill it was posted everywhere building a tak launcher and going for the quick kill… that worked untill it was posted everywhere then it suddenly stoped working :( …me wonders why…

also something about a good ‘mix’ of units in each tech level and how to counter unit mixes…
like in T3 i allways build SAB’s and T2 mobile missles… UNLESS im againsts cybran cuz the missles come back @ me :(((
or how no one builds t3 mobile arty… even aeon where theirs can shoot on the run rather then haveing to deploy like everyone elses :(

just simple takics to wake everyone up to the fact that there is something OTHER then SAB’s

Off topic a little bit (though this is an “open” thread), someone spotted a Chinese strategic sub on Google Earth!

    I won!

    congrats:)

  13. bob Says:

    what’s a meta poll?

  14. Gryphyn Says:

I think this site needs more porn.

  15. Gryphyn Says:

    I am, of course, joking.

  16. Baddox Says:

T2A` : That must’ve taken forever to build! I didn’t know those were ever used. Hopefully the US has their Corps of Engineers working on a strategic missile defense.

  17. Sear Says:

They could just build a battleship :P

  18. Will (green) Says:

I want multi-tiered missiles, now that you mention it. There’s absolutely no good reason the start missiles don’t have MIRV capability.
    It’d be cool to have T1, T2, and T3 SMLs, I think.

  19. Cyde Weys Says:

AJ: I agree, a new layout would be nice, but I lack the skills to do it. I’m a programmer, not a designer. If anyone wants to volunteer or has any concrete ideas (i.e. send me a modified version of the current stylesheet so we can test run it), that’d be great.

Bob: A meta poll is a poll about polls (as this one is). Meta-anything has the same meaning. This post is a meta post, because it is about the blog itself rather than about the game.

  20. T2A` Says:

There’s like a million Wordpress themes available for download.

  21. sprcow Says:

I like the layout Cyde. Minimalist is refreshing sometimes. Easy to find what you want and not noisy. Plus it doesn’t look quite as guilty if someone sees me reading it at work. :P

  22. SigH-Max Says:

So far, I like SupCom talk. Maybe you could add news more often :)

  23. Cyde Weys Says:

I add news as often as I can find it, honestly. Let me link to the write for us page; if there’s any news you want us to know about, or you want to write up a blurb for the site, please go for it. Right now it’s mostly just me updating the site, and my attention is mostly diverted elsewhere. So, all the help I can get ..

  24. SigH-Max Says:

Fine =) I saw that link before, but I’m not that much of a writer. If there are some good news, I’ll use it !
