SupCom YouTube video roundup part 1

There are a nice number of Supreme Commander videos on YouTube now, so I figured it’d be worthwhile to examine all of the best ones in a single place. Let’s start with four. Click through to go below the fold, because I’m not trying to spam up the main blog page with a bunch of embedded videos.

This video shows the re-engineered explosions in the 4th Dimension mod. The 4th Dimension mod changes many aspects of the game to make it more realistic, including projectile speeds, the look of explosions, and more. Personally, I prefer these explosions to the ones that ship with the game. GPG, maybe we can get some improvement on the explosions for Forged Alliance?

I’m not quite sure what this is supposed to be, but it looks like someone is working on a mod to add a new unit that attacks in a lag-inducing, swarm-like manner. They sort of look like UEF ACU pods, but there are a lot more of them, and they’re shooting weapons. Look at how they bring down Fatboys with ease!

This video shows a Supreme Commander feel mod. It modifies unit speeds, sink speeds, and fall speeds to make the game more realistic. The CZAR falling out of the sky in this video is really awesome, as is the battleship taking a full three minutes to sink (versus the utterly preposterous seconds that we currently see in Supreme Commander). Even siege bots’ speeds have been adjusted so they don’t look like they’re on crack.

Okay, this one is kind of silly. A guy makes a bunch of nuke launchers in the shape of the text “Fuck you” and launches them across the map, with predictable results.

Well that last one was interesting at least… I liked how you could read the words as the nukes launched through the air.

I like that feel video. The normal speeds look silly after you see the alternative.

Theres a great video of someone launching “USA” at north korea on the Earth map. The flashing word lasts all the way across Europe and most of Asia XD

SupCom’s default explosions are mostly flat, 2D textures. I wonder how much of a performance hit we would take for full 3-D explosions like the ones in the first video? They certainly look very good.

I agree, the “feel” video makes things look a lot cooler, but unfortunately it would kill gameplay.

  6. Laconic Youth Says:

fyi, the last one looked like it said, “fuck off.” the letters weren’t exactly clear though.

  7. Jester Says:

Does anyone know what the song in the feel video by chance?

  8. Jester Says:

I should really learn to type better. What I was trying to say was does anyone know the name of that song in the feel video.

  9. Grokmoo Says:

The music is Craig Armstrong’s “Hanging” for the slower part and “Escape” for falling Czar part of the video. Speaking of the falling Czar, I really wish the Czar would fall straight down rather than at an angle. I really don’t see any particular reason why a giant saucer would tend to fall faster on one side than the other.

  10. Stealth Says:

Grokmoo, I’m pretty sure it’s aerodynamics or something. Drop a fribee while it’s level. It will will most likely tilt while it falls. ;)

  11. Grokmoo Says:

Stealth: I’m afraid your analogy doesn’t really hold in this case. For one, I think you will find that a frisbee won’t tilt if you drop it indoors where there isn’t strong air turbulence. When it does tilt, it is due to essentially random turbulent forces in the air. An object of the Czar’s (presumed) immense mass would be minimally effected by these sorts of small random variations. Assuming all the engines went out at the same time, the Czar would tend to fall straight down. The only possibility I can think of is that the engines on one side of the ship go out before the other, for some unknown reason.

  12. Molloy Says:

It just falls sideways because it looks more dramatic that way. And the scale of the wreck is more obvious when it lands sideways. You’re meant to think of it as a flying Titanic.
