Fresh patch open thread
Smell that scent in the air? That’s the olfactory sensation of fresh patch, hot from the oven. And predictably, you readers are going to want to talk about it, as well as other assorted topics (it has been awhile since the last open thread, after all).
I have been contacted by several more people who say they want to write for this blog, but past experience leaves me feeling a little pessimistic. The problem is not even one of these people in the past has stuck around to become a regular writer. If a person writes more than one post that’s lucky. Sigh. Well, keep hoping.
And as is tradition, here’s a poll to occupy ten seconds of your valuable time:

they dont realy DO anything….exept that hax mercy…..i think after reading unconq’s post that that AZ was on the right track …supcom needs 100’s more units not just 3 more , then it wont matter if we dont use T1 bots in late game cos theres so much else to chose from….i mean think about TA did you see any peewees in late game? (im realy just guessing here since I never played TA online) but TA was awesome cos it had SO MUCH stuff to play around with….Also i think smaller units would be used more if they had MUCH better pathfinding(and maybe a speed increase?) ie. you could swarm larger units easily cos at the moment if you try to swarm with say 100 mantises..mantii? manti?…the front ones take off and some of the side ones but the middle ones just SIT THERE its so annoying…in conclusion X-treme pathfinding upgrade + many more units = win

“i mean think about TA did you see any peewees in late game?”
Hell, yes! Pewee spam later in the game is a marvelous - and cheap! - way to make the enemy divide his attention and forces, especially on large maps. He can’t ignore it, and by the time he realizes that it’s a ruse you’ve already drawn him into another front or three. It’s hardly a make-or-break tactic, but it’s usually at least somewhat effective and has the added benefit of irritating the foe :-).

Pathfinding upgrade + Unit improvements = win, in my opinion anyway :P

I don’t see how the Mercy is unbalancing. Even the AI can defend against that thing and it can’t defend against anything. D:

what pathfinding upgrade? ASF was the only improvement to the units i could detect (improved back to original intention). The new ones don’t suck but one each side wasn’t enough to justify the “you asked for them, they’re coming” crap. Hopefully we get a few more before FA.
oh yeah, since this is an open thread, FA wont be binary compatible with sup com so sup com owners wont be able to play FA owners. Surely maintaining 2 engines is more work than 1. I predict sup com being dropped on its face as soon as FA is released. Considering the physics changes I can see why they’ve done this but i think its a stupid plan. (original sup com owners will get what they expect, units that behave like they always have in sup com. But multiplayer FA and sup com owners will be playing with the new physics anyway, so big deal)
did any of that make sense? Time to ramble else where…

3 new units… a little light. But then not using those three unit slots to help develop more variety in T3 land units… wasteful.

You misunderstood zordon, what I mean is if GPG improved all the units to make them more useful and improved the pathfinding then it would be a win for me. But they haven’t done that unfortunately.

I was happy with the patch. As a UEF player, I’m quite happy with the Janus, it fills a nice role of an upgraded and much more potent Scorcher. It is super-effective against massed units or light buildings/defenses, and attacks in a very different style than gunships which allows for tactical variety. I can’t comment on the other two factions units as I have no experience with them yet.
Maybe I’m just easier to please, but I have a lot of faith in Supcom and FA, and I’m willing to wait and pay a little for things to get improved. I’m satisfied that the T3 Air Superiority balance was fixed, we just had to wait a bit. I’m committed to the game for the long haul, I think my experience with TA Spring taught me a lot of patience.

I haven’t had much of a chance to play with the new Air-superiority tweaks. What have people noticed about that? I take it Air Sup. Fighters are a bit better now?
I haven’t seen either the Aeon or Cybran new unit, but I sure thought the napalm effect on the UEF bomber was a blast. I was playing with my buddies, and we were stomping an enemy base on a small map. I had a group of T2 tanks rolling through, and my buddy was dropping the napalm right in front of my troops on the point defenses. It was a lot of fun.

Yeah, since Gryphyn brings it up, I want to say there have been a few moments where Supcom has really “wowed” me with its graphics effects, and watching the firestorm created by a huge pass of Janus bombers is truly a sight to behold. Another one would be dropping a nuke on a massive T3 powergen/massfab complex…

I saw another reason why these new things aren’t unbalanced. When you build Mercies they just kind of stack up and eventually they blow up for no reason. ^___^
August 6th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
there is a reason for mercy to blow up. or rather crash. It has fuel which it uses while stationary because it can not land. Also it does not refuel. Its one of those “use it or loose it” units. U get awesome firepower but short lifespan.

(If someone mentioned this already, oh well; I missed it.) Oh, muh GORDE. They fixed the formation AI! If you have units selected that aren’t near each other and tell them all to form up somewhere, they all move right to where they should be instead of meeting in the middle. Yay! Only took six months and ten patches to get that fix!

theShiznit approves.
And formation attack seems to be working better for me now

holy crap, thats worth mentioning!
