The last chapter of good vanilla gameplay…
The money tournament that starts tomorrow is my goodbye to retail supreme commander. I think almost all good players will move on to Forged Alliance like i do. It will be fun and maybe i play retail in lan tournaments such as i32 and a custom or two. But i won´t play it ranked for real ever again. Anyway i think it will be a awesome goodbye and i will do my best to win, even thou BluescreenISU is the big favourite in my eyes. After his game vs TheLittleOne on syrtis i was really impressed of how he managed to kill TLO on his favourite map. Another player to look out for is piipeti who has been playing much retail this month and got to number 2 on ladder. I would also not underestimate for TAG_ROCK_ who is a really good player and Djinn who is the one i used to fear the most. I had not played retail for a month, but now ive been practising really hard the last two days so it at least could be exciting.
Ok, i dont have time to write more now… i got to go and make some more massfabs.

You know, I tried to watch the tournament final but my mind is so set in “Forged Alliance” mode now I just couldn’t do it. Now that I have an FA beta key and have started playing online ranked games, the balance is so different that it just isn’t worth going back to the original retail version. In my opinion the FA balance is so superior that it truly is a whole new (and much better) game. I much prefer to watch and study FA matches now to try to learn the new balance than to watch a game of original retail.
Still congrats to Sir_Loui for a second place finish, and thanks to him also for continuing to help keep SupCom Talk alive.

I was thinking after previous discussion here, that perhaps what Supcom needs in terms of community places is a decent replays site. Now I know I know, before you all shoot me down we have GPG AND Supcom Live as well as Gamereplays.org! However I’m thinking it would be like a comments-based mini-forum, very small and personal, no subscription and big editing on there – with Youtube-like “five-stars” ratings or a Digg-like submission/hits system, with weighted comments below. I’m thinking simplistic though, maybe even through Drupal or something but just for discussing tactics and fun intricate Supcom stuff. GPG is too “official” (!), Supcom Live is messy and never updated, and Gamereplays.org is great but not Supcom “exclusive”. Thoughts?

Supcom Live has some great content but seems to have died… GPG is the easiest to use by far but its hard for a good replay to stand out there.
For replays I do think GameReplays.org is about as good as it gets. It has just about everything you suggested, a scoring system as well as comment discussion on individual games. The replay reviews are even better, with the strengths/weaknesses of each player discussed. It may not be Supcom specific and it does require a login but the SupCom section is still pretty well done and there is a lot of good discussion there.
As for discussing tactics and intricate supcom stuff… what better place than Supcomtalk.com! Man I need to get permission to actually make posts here, there is a lot of stuff worth posting about right now.

Cyde Weys used to do replay reviews, maybe Sir_Loui or TCC should.

must. install… faster!
November 6th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
I pre-ordered through Gamespot to get my beta key, but that means now I have to wait until they mail me my copy of FA! Oh woe is me!!!
November 8th, 2007 at 11:22 am
Hurrah, I got my copy! I installed it and played through the first mission. I must say, my computer is no slouch with a high-end Dual Core CPU and a nVidia 8800GTS, but it was crawling on the campaign level. The map is just huge, and there are tons of scripted battles going on, my FPS was down around 10-15 much of the time. Slowing down the game to -2 helped me get back above 20 but the level took forever to play. I think its all the scripted AI actions that slow it down, otherwise I’m not sure why. It was fun though, lots of fighting and some pretty decent AI attacks. I even almost managed to lose at one point.

Engineer; so post something already!!!

I should email Cyde Weys about posting on the main site.
If you have been playing the Beta, you already know what the new gameplay is like. There have been some balance changes between the Beta and the Release versions, these have been posted on the FA website and are relatively minor; probably the most noticable one being the Monkeylord being made substantially cheaper. Otherwise, there are quite a few interesting topics to post on.
There are of course new maps in ranked play. Several of these are relatively small, so lots of intense T1 action will be had. Of particular notice is the number of maps with substantial water, water is now very common in ranked play and of course with all the amphibious, naval, and air units available now it is a whole new battlefield; water really isn’t much of an obstacle to action anymore. Overall the amount of mass spots in the new maps seems to be quite large as well. Most of the original maps had 4 with maybe a few more nearby, but the newer maps seem to have as many as 5 or 6 at the starting location with many more in the nearby area. This plus the wreckage available on many maps makes mass easy to come by.
The importance of the commander is more noticable than ever. One of the new 5×5 maps features a small triangular island in the center that both players start on. I’ve only played one game on it so far, but not surprisingly it resulted in a draw. Both I and my opponent pushed hard with our comms and, with no-where for either of us to run to, we eventually both went down in a double explosion. I see this being a lot more common; comms are now so much more powerful and important on a battlefield dominated by T1, and using your comm for map control is so critical now that map control is more important. Therefore, on the smaller maps comms will be duking it out regularly and skillfully using your comm is going to become quite critical. I would rate this as a positive development overall, but on maps like the one I mentioned (don’t know its name off the top of my head) it will certainly make for a lot more draws.
Personally, I’m having a lot of fun. When SupCom first came out I had my “First Happy Time” as I tromped all over people who had no clue how SupCom worked, while I with my Total Annihilation experience was able to dominate. Now, having spent time playing and studying the beta for FA, I’m once again enjoying a “Happy Time” crushing people who are totally unused to the new FA playstyle. I know this is shortlived, but I’ll enjoy it all the same!

Well I wrote an email to Cyde Weys about writing for the blog, we’ll see what happens with that.
